WUCWO (World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations)

WUCWO currently has a membership estimated at 8 million women from 57 countries and is recognized by the Holy See. WUCWO has consultative status with the United Nations.

Mission Statement

To promote the presence, participation and co-responsibility of Catholic women in society and Church, in order to enable them to fulfil their mission of evangelisation and to work for human development.

To achieve its mission, WUCWO

  1. Promotes the formation of women to meet contemporary challenges;
  2. Fosters awareness and respect of cultural diversity;
  3. Promotes the international dimension within its Member Organisations;
  4. Co-ordinates activites of Member Organisations at international level;
  5. Presents the positions of WUCWO and represents the Member Organisations at international bodies;
  6. Networks with other international organisations and faith communities for the respect of human rights, especially for women;
  7. Encourages ecumenical and interreligious dialogue.

Membership is open to all Catholic Women’s organisations which are:

Recognised by national conferences of bishops; independent of party politics; and whose objects are in conformity with those of WUCWO.

WUCWO gives all Catholic Women’s League members within New Zealand the opportunity to input their opinions on matters that not only effect New Zealand but the rest of the world.

New Zealand belongs to the Asia Pacific Region.

The most recent World Assembly was held in Arlington Washington DC from May 30th to June 7th, 2006 with the Theme “Blessed are the Peace makers”.

Women’s Voice, WUCWO magazine is issued three times a year and gives us worldwide news and updates. This magazine can be ordered from the diocesan WUCWO convenors.
